Detectors

Be it solid state or scintillation Backscattered Electron (BS) detectors, Cathodoluminescence, STEM or MCP detectors, K.E. Developments has the product to suit you, many are available in fixed, motorised or bellows sealed formats.

Solid State Backscattered Electron Detector

This state-of-the-art Backscattered detector uses a large silicon diode exclusively manufactured for KED to our own specific design and characterised for electron detection. It is highly compact, with a four quadrant annular construction, which achieves almost perfect symmetry virtually eliminating topographic information and producing a pure compositional signal. However, if topographic information is required, the ability to select quadrants allows this to be done.
  • Excellent atomic number resolution 0.1Z at Z=30
  • High bandwidth TV operation, low noise for slow scan
  • Four quadrant detector for composition or topographic studies
  • Choice of detectors for normal, low voltage, UHV, Cathodoluminescence or STEM

Motorised Backscattered Electron Detector

The K.E.Developments Motorised Backscattered Detector is fitted with 3 individual operating positions allowing the use of the detector and a Faraday Cup as well as the fully retracted position. Alignment of the two detector positions is normally better than 20um. Its main application is for detector assemblies that are mounted in inconvenient places, often behind the electron optical column. Its use is invaluable in systems used in hazardous environments such as”hot cells”. A Bellows version is also available.

  • Remote Retraction of detectors
  • Precision Detector Alignment, <20um
  • Three Positions Possible

Centaurus: "The Complete Detector System"

Designed as a scintillation type BS detector, this innovative product can generate either compositional or topographic images. With a quickly removable tip, it can be converted to a Cathodoluminescence detector in seconds giving an additional function for little extra cost, without compromising the quality of the results obtained. It also gives excellent images at low kV - ideal for those studying fragile and beam sensitive samples. Given its simple conversion, we believe that you will agree CENTAURUS is indeed 'The Complete Detector System'.

Backscatter

  • Excellent low kV performance
  • Good atomic number resolution
  • High spacial resolution
  • Operates at all pressures
  • Composition or topography

Cathodoluminescence

  • Sensitive CL detector
  • 300-650nm standard

CENTAURUS Detector Motorised Bellows variant

The K.E. Developments Motorised Bellows CENTAURUS Detector has all the functions of the standard retractable model . Its main application is for detector assemblies that are mounted in inconvenient places, often behind the electron optical column. Its use is invaluable in systems used in hazardous environments such as”hot cells”. A Bellows version is also available.

STEM Detectors

All STEM detectors from K. E. Developments can be connected to our existing solid state Backscattered systems via the push-pull retraction arm using a simple conversion kit. The single grid is the simplest form, and can either be fitted to the standard specimen stage or is completely supported by the stand itself. Two heights of top section are supplied, so that either light or dark field images can be achieved. Alternatively, individual diode elements can be supplied which are fitted below the specimen stage. Up to twelve grids can be fitted into the KED STEM grid holder (see Detector Accessories) that is supported by the specimen holder for multiple specimen analysis. A dedicated retractable unit complete with its own electronics allows the STEM Detector to be used with any make of SEM.

MicroChannel Plate (MCP) Detector

Non-conducting, insulating or fragile specimens can be seriously compromised, as the deposited charge from the incident electron beam causes radiation damage. To circumvent this problem, the sample must either be protected by a metal coating, or a chemical stabilization step. However, the MCP detector is ideal for low voltage SEM that does not require such sample pre-treatment. The energy of the incident beam is reduced to the 1-5kV range minimising radiation damage to the sample. Low kV imaging is also a function of the CENTAURUS detector (above).
  • Low kV operation
  • Ideal for beam sensitive specimens
  • Secondary and Backscattered detection
  • Split plate for composition or topography
  • Annular device giving even illumination
